The Making of the Haydon Wick Parish Remembrance Display

The Making of the Haydon Wick Parish Remembrance Display 2333 1750 Liz Matthews

A True Community Effort

It was a real team event, coming together to create this year’s poignant remembrance display for our parish. The initial inspiration came from Laura, who had the wonderful idea to use recycled plastic bottles to craft beautiful poppies.

Jackie was tasked with bringing this vision to life, and what an incredible job she did. Hundreds of plastic bottles were collected, generously donated by members of our Haydon Wick community. Cllrs Vinay Manro, Leanne Stevenson and Ellen Baker-Walker rolled up their sleeves to support the office team, carefully cutting, shaping and drilling the bottle bases in preparation for painting.

With the poppies all ready, the next step was the display itself. Cllrs Roy Worman, Richard Hailstone and Ellen Baker-Walker, along with some wonderfully helpful parishioners, worked tirelessly to drag out the camo nets and meticulously attach each handmade poppy. The end result is a breath-taking tribute, created with the utmost respect for the brave men, women and animals who have defended, and continue to defend, our freedoms. A huge thank you to 162 Regiment RLC Army Reserve Centre for their kind loan of the camo net, which helped to make this display possible.

This was a true community effort, with so many members of the Haydon Wick Parish coming together to honour the service and sacrifice of those who have gone before us. It’s a powerful reminder of the strength and compassion that exists within our local area.

We welcome you all to join us for the upcoming Remembrance Services, where we will gather as a community to pay our respects:

  • Sunday 10th November, 10.30am – Wreath laying at the Swindon Cenotaph, Regent Circus
  • Sunday 10th November, 11.00am – Wreath laying near the Play Area on Havisham Drive (SN25 1TX)
  • Monday 11th November, 11.00am – Wreath laying at the Parish Council Offices (Tommy Figure), Thames Avenue

Remembrance Services offer the community a chance to gather and honour the brave men, women, and animals who have defended, and continue to defend, our freedoms. Everyone is welcome to attend these events to commemorate this important occasion.

Ground Maintenance Facility Update

Ground Maintenance Facility Update 2560 1762 Liz Matthews

Removal of hedges on the open spaces in Chatsworth Road and repositioning of the boundary fencing in line with the agreed planning permission.

We are thrilled to share the latest update on the construction of the Parish Council’s new Grounds Maintenance Facility. The steel structure, concrete bases and windows are now fully fitted. The next stage is the installation of the 32 UV roof panels, fitting the internal stairs and fitting the kitchen units, along with the plumbing elements for the kitchen and toilets. The next stage will be setting up the electrical points.

As part of the ongoing development, it has become necessary to remove some of the hedges that border the boundary fencing on the open space in Chatsworth Road. This will straighten out the perimeter within the leisure garden site. This step is crucial to ensure there is sufficient space around the boundary of the facility, in line with the agreed planning permission. The Parish Council will be conducting the hedge removal works on Tuesday 1st October 2024, ready for the contractors to straighten out the boundary fencing.

The hedges in question are being removed to facilitate the construction process and to comply with safety and planning requirements, however, we will be planting new hedgerows along this boundary fence once the project has been completed.

We appreciate the community’s understanding and support as we continue to develop this important facility. The new Grounds Maintenance Facility will greatly enhance our ability to maintain and improve public spaces, ensuring they remain safe, clean, and enjoyable for all residents.

A site map of the proposed minimal changes is shown below. If you have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact us. Alternatively, you can follow along on the journey by visiting our parish website https://haydonwick.gov.uk/gmf-project/
