Become a Haydon Wick Parish Councillor: Co-option Vacancy

Haydon Wick Parish Council is seeking a dedicated individual to serve as a Parish Councillor and help shape the future of our community.

As a Parish Councillor, you will:

  • Represent the interests of the parish and the community
  • Influence important local issues like planning, environment, transport and community facilities
  • Work alongside community groups to improve the parish
  • Have a voice in how council tax money is invested in local services and amenities
  • Attend meetings, engage with residents, and make decisions that will have a real impact on the community.

It’s a rewarding way to give back and ensure our parish remains a vibrant, desirable place to live, work and raise a family.

If you are passionate about improving our community with a few hours (or more!) each month to volunteer, we encourage you to put yourself forward. Any qualifying Haydon Wick resident can become a candidate.

  • You have been convicted of a crime with a prison sentence of 3+ months in the last 5 years
  • You have been declared bankrupt
  • You are employed by the Parish Council

As a councillor, you’ll need to attend bi-weekly meetings (minimum 4 hours per month). And support working parties.

There are allowances available to cover travel/subsistence costs when on council duties.

A Heartfelt Thank You for Our Incredible VE Day Celebration Family Picnic!
What an absolutely magnificent day we had at Mouldon Hill Country Park! We are overwhelmed with gratitude for the incredible turnout and the wonderful community spirit that made our VE Day Celebration Family Picnic such a resounding success.
The weather couldn’t have been more perfect, blessing us with glorious sunshine as approximately 400 residents came together to create memories that will last a lifetime. From those who arrived on foot, by car, or via the nostalgic Swindon & Cricklade Railway, the excitement was palpable from the moment everyone arrived.
A massive thank you to our amazing contributors who made the day truly special:
  • Swindon Brass: Your melodious tunes transported us back in time, filling the park with wonderful nostalgic music
  • George Scarrott’s and Sons Funfair: Your traditional attractions like Coconut shy, hook-a-duck, and swing boats brought joy to children and adults alike
  • Mandies Magic Brushes: The face painting was a hit, transforming our little ones into walking works of art
  • Nick’s Ices: Those refreshing ice creams were the perfect treat on a sunny day
  • Our Local PCSOs: A special thank you to our dedicated Police Community Support Officers who cycled n to check that we were all keeping safe.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Nick’s Ices and Motor Care Ltd for their kind donations that contributed to the success of this event. To our dedicated volunteers, hardworking staff, and supportive councillors whose support made this celebration possible. Your commitment to our community does not go unnoticed, and we are incredibly grateful for your passion and effort.
The lawn games were a delightful throwback to traditional pastimes, with families enjoying Croquet and other classic activities. It was heartwarming to see generations coming together, sharing laughter and creating beautiful memories.

Discover Seven Fields in Bloom

 

Seven Fields is a hidden gem right on our doorstep. As the seasons shift, the fields come alive with colour, birdsong, and new life. Whether you are after a peaceful stroll or a bit of fresh air, the winding paths offer a perfect escape close to home.

 

This space is rich in biodiversity. Wild cherry trees and sycamores are bursting into leaf. Apple blossom is starting to show, and cowslips brighten up the grasslands. Spanish bluebells line the edges, and if you look carefully, native bluebells are blooming too. There are arum lilies, hawthorns in flower, great hyacinths, and blossom everywhere you turn.

 

The Importance of Wildflower Meadows

 

Seven Fields is especially valued for its wildflower meadows. These areas are more than just beautiful. They are vital habitats for local wildlife. Bees, butterflies, hoverflies, and other pollinators rely on them for nectar and shelter. Birds and small mammals find food and nesting space among the grasses and flowers.

 

Wildflower meadows also help fight climate change by storing carbon in the soil. They support soil health and help reduce flooding by absorbing rainwater naturally. In a world where wild spaces are shrinking, these meadows are more important than ever.

 

To help protect them, please keep to the mown paths. Walking through the meadows damages plants before they have a chance to grow and seed. Staying on the paths keeps these habitats healthy and thriving.

 

Seven Fields is not just a lovely walk. It is a living and breathing part of our local environment. On your next visit, take a moment to enjoy what is growing, singing, and blooming all around you.

Our community is coming together to make a difference – not just for our environment, but for our mental health and social connections! This litter picking event is more than just a clean-up; it’s an opportunity to boost your wellbeing, enjoy the outdoors, and connect with neighbours.

I’m so proud of the incredible effort our community put into the recent tree planting event at Heaton Close, Haydon Wick, and while the sight of fresh green saplings is beautiful, the true impact goes much deeper.

This project was all about enhancing biodiversity — creating rich, thriving environments where wildlife can flourish. Every tree we planted will become a home for birds, insects, and small mammals, supporting vital ecosystems right here in Haydon Wick. By increasing tree cover, we’re also helping to strengthen local habitats, improve soil health, and promote the natural balance that keeps our green spaces vibrant and resilient.

But biodiversity isn’t just about wildlife — it benefits our community, too. More diverse green spaces improve air quality, reduce flooding risks, and provide peaceful areas for everyone to enjoy. These trees will grow into natural sanctuaries, offering shade, beauty, and a deeper connection to nature.

I want to say a huge thank you to Wiltshire Wildlife Trust, Swindon Borough Council, Great Western Community Forest for organising this event. And to every volunteer and resident who rolled up their sleeves to help plant so many trees. Your hard work is helping to create a lasting legacy of sustainability and biodiversity.

Let’s keep this momentum going! If you’re inspired to do more, there’ll be plenty of opportunities to get involved in future projects. Together, we can make Haydon Wick a leading example of how communities can support biodiversity and protect the environment.
