Companions Café Update

Companions Café Update 1600 1200 Liz Matthews

This morning’s Companions Café was a lovely group, it was the second gathering of this supportive community. The relaxed and welcoming atmosphere encouraged companions to open up and learn from one another as they shared their challenging experiences on their dementia journeys.

Attendees enjoyed an interactive morning filled with various activities, including pebble painting, flower pressing, word searches, and discussions about music genres. The event provided a warm and safe space for those caring for loved ones living with dementia to connect, find support, and share experiences with others who truly understand their situation.

The Companions Café offers regular resources and guest speakers sharing invaluable advice. Limited spaces are available for loved ones to attend, supported by experienced volunteers. The café meets every 4th Thursday of the month from 10:00 am to 11:30 am at the Haydon Wick Parish Council Office (SN25 1QQ).

Those interested in learning more about the Haydon Wick Parish Council Companion Café are encouraged to reach out to Co-Ordinator Jo at memorycafe@haydonwick.gov.uk or 01793 722446 for more information and to join in creating heart-warming moments.

Commemorating the 80th Anniversary of D-Day

Commemorating the 80th Anniversary of D-Day 1512 2016 Liz Matthews
Residents from The Haven and Memory Café came together in a heart warming celebration to honour the remarkable D-Day Landings of World War II. The national dish of fish and chips was served, evoking cherished memories over a delicious meal.

The talented singer Nicki Pearce graced us with her beautiful voice, serenading the room with beloved tunes that transported us back in time. Residents joyfully sang along, waving flags and taking to the dancefloor in high spirits. It was a poignant moment, remembering both fond memories and absent friends, with a few tears shed in reflection.

As we commemorated the 80th anniversary of Operation Overlord – the largest combined naval, air and land campaign in history – we paid tribute to the brave soldiers who united for this pivotal operation. The incredible afternoon allowed us to honour their immense courage and sacrifice through shared stories, jovial singing and amazing company. We felt deep gratitude resonating throughout the room.

The event truly captured the resilient spirit of that era, filling our hearts with pride for those who served. It was an afternoon brimming with reminiscence, companionship and respect for the heroes of D-Day.

Volunteers’ Week 2024

Volunteers’ Week 2024 2480 1676 Liz Matthews
🎉 Let’s hear it for our incredible volunteers! 🙌
This Volunteers’ Week, we hung out the bunting to honour the superstars who make our community programmes shine. From our lovely over 60s crew to our memory café champions, our trusty community bus drivers, and our litter-picking heroes – we couldn’t do it without you!
We invited these generous souls for an afternoon of sweet treats and warm conversation as a small token of our immense gratitude. Your selfless dedication allows us to keep bringing joy, connection, and vibrance to every corner of our community.
We even enjoyed the company of our ‘little-pickers’ volunteers who with their child minder go out into the community once a month dressed in the hi-viz to collect litter, instilling a sense of community and responsibility for their environment at this young age is awesome!
Volunteering is the magic that helps communities thrive, and we’re forever grateful to have such a passionate, caring bunch in our midst. Give it up for our local legends! 👏👏👏
Volunteers’ Week is a national celebration of the incredible impact volunteers make across the UK. From June 1st-7th, let’s shout it from the rooftops: volunteers are the backbone of society, and we couldn’t do it without them!

Soft Play and Socialise

Soft Play and Socialise 1512 2016 Liz Matthews
On Friday, 31st May, the Haydon Wick Parish Council Office transformed into a wonderland of soft play paradise! Little ones bounced, tumbled, and made new friends.🤩
🎈 As the children were having fun, parents kicked back, relaxed, and connected with others over refreshments in a calm environment. It was the ultimate win-win situation and the event was a half-term hit with our young families. The attendees really welcomed the quality time with their little ones and the fantastic opportunity to meet others.
The Parish Council Office buzzed with excitement as children giggled and explored the inflatable play structures. It was a day filled with laughter, play, and cherished moments for families throughout the community.🎉

Memory Café – An Unforgettable Reptile Rendezvous

Memory Café – An Unforgettable Reptile Rendezvous 1494 1600 Liz Matthews
🐍 An Unforgettable Reptile Rendezvous at Memory Café! 🦎
Yesterday, we had the pleasure of welcoming some scaly guests from the Animal Club!🐲 From a colour-changing ‘karma’ the chameleon to a friendly boa constrictor, the exotic reptiles captivated us all.
As Rebecca from the Animal Club shared her wealth of knowledge (including the surprising fact that she sleeps with the boa in her bedroom!), our brave residents stepped out of their comfort zones to touch and interact with these incredible creatures. 🕷️
It was a truly sensory experience that sparked curiosity in everyone. After the reptile encounter, we concluded with Lin’s seated exercise session, ensuring that our bodies and minds remained active and engaged. These exercises are incredibly beneficial for all, helping to activate different parts of the brain that can sometimes go dormant during the progression of dementia and Alzheimer’s. 💪
At Memory Café, we believe in creating unforgettable moments that stimulate the senses and bring smiles to everyone’s faces. Here’s to more adventures and making lasting memories together! 🌟
Can’t wait for the next one on Wednesday 12th June!
