Haydon Wick celebrates inclusive new play area designed by and for local children 1600 1201 Laura Cutter

Haydon Wick Parish Council proudly opened the newly renovated Trent Road Play Area based in Haydon Wick, North Swindon. The expanded play space features new accessible and interactive equipment chosen by the children themselves.

Working closely with play area specialists Wicksteed, the Council invited current Year 3 and Year 4 pupils from Greenmeadow Primary School and former Pupils in Year 7 at Nova Hreod Academy to envision their dream play area. The final design brought their ideas to life with imaginative elements like interactive panels, a double width slide, a basket swing, mushroom stepping stools and more, to ensure children of all abilities can enjoy the new space.

At a lively opening event, local councillors and staff gathered as the children were excited to first try out the equipment. The brightly coloured play area is more than a place to play, it represents the democratic values and community spirit that Haydon Wick Parish Council strives to achieve. Wicksteed provided some merchandise, and the Parish Council was armed with sweets and bubbles to add to the excitement of the new play space.

Some comments captured from the local children included:

“I loved the basket swing because I could go on it with my friend.”

“I loved the spinning net because you can go different speeds and take your hands off – if you’re feeling really brave.”

Greenmeadow Primary School’s Head Teacher, Kate McKinnon, was delighted that pupils were able to be present and said “Last year, the Year 6 children at Greenmeadow Primary School were lucky enough to work with Haydon Wick Parish Council on the new design for the Trent Road Play Area. The children were able to review designs and give their opinions on which pieces of apparatus they felt would be popular and shared a viewpoint of how this could be inclusive and accessible for all children enjoying the facility. By working with the Parish Council, the School could develop the skills of sharing a viewpoint and understand democracy in action when working with the local councillors. This year, we have been lucky as our Year 3 and Year 4 children have been invited for the opening of the play park which we are really excited about. Having safe and exciting spaces to play locally is really important for our families and we are lucky to both be able to walk here from school and for many of our homes.“

Councillor Steve Heyes, Chair of the Play Area Working Party said “The Council is really proud of its 24 play areas and is committed to improving these facilities, in line with the Community Led Plan’s objective, to make them inclusive and accessible. Working with local children and young people is a very rewarding part of this project and ensures that these play areas are future proofed for years to come, with the children from today bringing their children along in the future, like their parents are doing today. Play areas and open spaces are proven to be a huge part of the health and wellbeing of young people. The continued support and advice from Benjamin’s Smile Charity and Mums on a Mission is also paramount to ensure that the Council is getting the investment in the local assets right.”

The Council invites all local children to visit Trent Road Play Area and make joyful memories together.

Haydon Wick Parish Council’s youth programme continues to build… 1900 1200 Caroline Hunt

‘Haydon Wick Parish Council’s youth programme continues to build, offering many opportunities for local young people to develop skills’

Haydon Wick Parish Council ran two fully inclusive youth activities during the February half-term holiday, both of which enabled the younger adults in the parish to participate in free, skill improving workshops.

The first was a trip to Ninja Warrior in Gloucester. The group enjoyed an opportunity to test their ninja skills, working in teams to scale obstacles and testing their nerve with free-falling challenges. The group worked as a team to overcome physical challenges, encouraging each other to take risks and compete in time trials.

Chair of the Parish Council’s Community Development Committee, Councillor Ellen Baker Lee had this to say about the programme:
“We are delighted that our new youth programme is going from strength to strength. We have learnt a lot in the last year by developing an extensive youth engagement programme, and we continue to learn and build on our successes. We were delighted with the response we received to the varied activities that took place during half-term, and we are really excited about the summer programme which seems to have something for everyone.

Last year we launched our Community Choices Project – in which we asked our community to vote for a community project to be delivered in this current financial year – to the end of March 2022. Our community voted for increased youth engagement, and I think we have done just that, and will continue to do so.

We continue to build working partnerships to deliver these varied, high quality youth activities and look forward to offering more skill developing workshops in the future’.

Also, available this year has been Youth Graffiti Design Workshops providing children and younger adults a safe space in which to explore their creativity by designing ambitious urban artworks.

The Parish Council also offered a free training afternoon with BEST – Be A Better You for local young people. This inclusive training session provided children and younger adults aged between 7 and 16 years a safe, fun and positive environment to develop essential life skills such as leadership and communication development. The programme has also offered a platform for increased socialisation, friendship building, and confidence making using sports activities such as boxing as a focus.

More events will be offered this summer. Details will be published on the Parish Council’s Youth Forum page on their website: https://haydonwick.gov.uk/youth-forum/ or follow news on Facebook and Instagram @haydonwickcouncil

Council host successful Superhero Youth Litter Picking Event

Council host successful Superhero Youth Litter Picking Event 1900 1200 Caroline Hunt

The Council was delighted with the turn-out of brilliant superhero youth litter pickers! A great morning was had cleaning up the area surrounding the Haydon Wick skate park.

Our litter pickers all withstood the elements to keep Haydon Wick tidy and safe. With over 15 bags of litter collected from paths and hedgerows in the area, we had some shivering superheroes who needed to regain their strength with cake and juice. Each superhero left with a certificate thanking them for their hard work and amazing help. We would like to say a huge thank you to all our litter pickers and their parents/carers for showing up and taking part. The World needs more Superheroes like you!
