Inspiring Wellbeing and Community Engagement This Mental Health Awareness Week

Inspiring Wellbeing and Community Engagement This Mental Health Awareness Week 2016 1512 Liz Matthews

This week, local residents in Swindon have been coming together to celebrate Mental Health Awareness Week through a series of uplifting, inclusive, and community-focused activities designed to support wellbeing, connection and positive mental health.

Monday set the tone for the week with not one, but two fantastic events offering something for everyone.

In the morning, attendees gathered at the Swindon & Cricklade Railway for a memorable event centred on community, local heritage and shared experiences. Guests enjoyed a warm welcome with a cuppa and conversation before Swindon & Cricklade Railway volunteer, Geoff delivered a fascinating talk on the railway’s history, highlighting the significant “David-and-Goliath” challenges it has overcome.

Swindon & Cricklade Railway volunteer, Tony then shared a powerful reflection on the importance of volunteering, explaining how supporting the railway has helped individuals develop skills, build friendships and improve their mental wellbeing. Guided tours of the railway rounded off the morning, giving attendees the chance to step back in time and connect with both history and each other.

In the evening, attention turned to physical wellbeing at the White Eagle Outdoor Gym, where residents took part in a high-energy group workout session. Led by Matt Fruci, the session combined expert guidance with humour and encouragement, creating a welcoming space for all abilities — including several first-time users.

Participants worked in pairs, alternating between gym equipment and bodyweight exercises, building both confidence and camaraderie. With sunshine, fresh air and the calming sounds of nature, the session highlighted the powerful link between physical activity and mental health. As one participant summed up: “Fun… but brutal!”

Continuing the theme of inclusivity, the week also featured the much-loved Craft and Connect group, offering a calm and creative space for people to relax, unwind and socialise. The session provided an opportunity for residents to express themselves creatively while building meaningful connections in a supportive environment.

We have focused on creating a varied programme to ensure there is something for everyone — from history and heritage, to physical activity, to creative wellbeing spaces.

Chairman of the Parish Council, Vinay Manro said:
“As a Parish Council, we place huge importance on creating supportive opportunities for residents to get together. Whether that’s through physical activity, shared interests or simply having a space to talk and connect, these moments play a vital role in supporting positive mental health. It’s fantastic to see our community engaging so warmly with the activities this week, and we’re committed to continuing to provide inclusive opportunities for everyone.”

Looking ahead, the week will conclude with an exciting opportunity for younger residents at the local skate park. This Saturday, from 2pm to 4pm, SK8Jam — delivered in partnership with ATBShop — will bring together skating, creativity and community.

The event will feature skate challenges and mini competitions, creative ‘arty’ activities, and plenty of space to socialise and relax, along with an ice cream van to add to the atmosphere. Local youth services will also be in attendance to share information about support available for young people in a friendly, no-pressure environment.

Residents are encouraged to come along — whether to skate, watch, create or simply enjoy the positive, welcoming atmosphere.

Together, these events highlight the importance of connection, movement, creativity and community support in promoting good mental health, demonstrating how small moments of togetherness can make a big difference.

Join us this Saturday at the skate park and be part of Mental Health Awareness Week in action.

Chairman’s statement following the incident in Haydon End 800 800 Georgina Morgan-Denn

Haydon Wick Parish Council was saddened to hear of the tragic events in Haydon End near to Mazurek Way. Our thoughts are with the victim’s family and friends at this awful time.

The Parish Councillors, Swindon Borough Ward Councillors and MP are being kept informed of developments. The Parish Council will continue to support Wiltshire Police in their investigation and with community leaders, local organisations, and residents in an effort to reduce crime and antisocial behaviour in Haydon Wick.

In the meantime residents can expect to see an increase in overt patrols across the Parish for the foreseeable future.

Please be advised that as an essential part of the investigation the Police had to cut some hedges to help locate evidence which may support the investigation. In the coming weeks the Parish Council will look at options, in consultation with local residents, on any reinstatements.

If you have any information that can help with the Police enquiries, please contact 101 quoting ‘Operation Glendale’

Mental Health at Christmas

Mental Health at Christmas 800 800 Georgina Morgan-Denn

The lead up to Christmas can be a hard time for many people. Studies have shown that by not talking about how you are feeling can have a hugely negative impact on your mental health.

Haydon Wick Parish Council is offering a Warm Space drop in, every Monday and Friday from 11.00am – 1.00pm until Friday 31st March 2023. Our large meeting room is open to come in from the cold weather, grab some warm refreshments more importantly, have a chat.

On Saturday 17th December our Christmas Parcels will be making their way to many of our residents who are over 70 years of age and who live alone. This scheme provides not only essential food products but a moment of important interaction for some residents who may not see anyone else over the festive period.

The Mobii Table has proved very popular with attendees of our Memory Cafe, and it encourages movement through physical participation and emotional well-being

The Parish Council purchased the Mobii Table in 2020 to coincide with the launch of its very successful Memory Café, which is held at the Council Offices, Haydon Wick, Swindon on the second and fourth Wednesday of every month.

Following the benefit to users of the Memory Café the Parish Council has agreed the device could benefit the wider community, such as residents of care homes and pupils at Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) schools to stimulate, calm and provide proprioceptive feedback.

The Mobii Table is an award-winning mobile interactive table/floor projection system with inter-generational appeal. This mobile device can be and projected onto any flat surface, which makes it very accessible for adults and older children in day and home care settings. The system delivers engaging visual activities which provide many opportunities for social enjoyment and shared laughter.

Councillor Vinay Manro, Chairman of Haydon Wick Parish Council says:

“We are delighted to offer this state-of-the-art sensory equipment for hire to the community. The Mobii Table has proved very popular with attendees of our Memory Cafe, and it encourages movement through physical participation and emotional well-being.”
