‘Haydon Wick Parish Council teams up with Wiltshire Wildlife Trust to open little eyes to the treasure that is Mouldon Hill Country Park’
Children of Haydon Wick Parish were invited along to Mouldon Hill Country Park on Saturday 21st January 2023, along with their parents and carers, to join a guided walk around the country park to explore the winter landscape. Neil Pullen, from Wiltshire Wildlife Trust, gave each of the attendees a little bag of bird seed and a bird identification sheet, and the focus of the walk was colours and different bird species.
Cormorants, a white egret, coots, and mallard ducks were amongst the birds that the group spotted whilst on their adventure, as well as a lovely little visit from the winter robin. The children each played a game of Pooh sticks from the bridge behind the lake, which turned out to be a lot of fun, along with a lesson in skimming small stones on the ice.
Along with cold toes, the children took a lot away with them from this little exploration. Feedback from parents indicated that the children thoroughly enjoyed the walk, and the children liked spending the rest of the day keeping an eye out for other bird species landing in their gardens. The Council look forward to working with The Wiltshire Wildlife Trust at future events this year.

The Parks & Open Spaces Team will soon be conducting its winter work schedule. Reoccurring items on the work schedule include:
Low level branch removal
Clearing ivy from the base of trees
Street sweeping and clearing the leaves from the footpaths
Cleaning the play area surfaces
The Team is currently servicing, maintaining and sharpening the tools for the job as well as carrying out usual duties such as litter picking, emptying the public waste bins, inspecting and making repairs to the play areas and dealing with day-to-day public enquiries.
Running concurrently with the winter projects, the Council’s chosen Autumn/Winter Shrub Bed & Hedges Maintenance Contractor (Teign Trees & Landscaping) is working its way through the Parish making good progress in Abbey Meads.
All of the above will ensure that the community of Haydon Wick remains a lovely and desirable place to live, work or send the children to school.

Haydon Wick Parish Council is pleased to announce that at a recent Full Council meeting it approved the appointment of Teign Trees & Landscaping Ltd as the new contractor for the autumn/winter grounds maintenance.
Following strict scrutiny of the three tenders received; the winning contractor was appointed for its proven track record in local authority grounds maintenance, a credible social and climate control programme, extensive use of electric machinery and value for money. The Council has also chosen to reinvest some of the cost savings into upskilling their in-house Parks & Open Spaces Team.
The new contractor will deliver an enhanced autumn/winter grounds maintenance service. Residents will see harder shrub and bush cuts, reductions to hedge heights especially those that have grown visibly over the past few years and affect highway visibility. This enhanced service contract is in addition to the Council’s previous commitment, to bolster its team with three new staff members who have responsibility to provide a compact road sweeper service and year-round bush/hedge cutting service. The Parks & Open Spaces Team of 11 has grown in response to residents’ requests for an improved grounds maintenance service.
Furthermore, with an investment into two electric vehicles, and the ongoing capital development of a new Grounds Maintenance Facility- expected to complete in 2023, the Council has continued to demonstrate its commitment to the improving the parks & open spaces in the parish.
Councillor S Heyes, Vice Chairman of Parks & Open Spaces Committee had this to say:
“We are proud to be delivering a more sustainable grounds maintenance service than ever before. We made a big commitment this financial year to improve our service levels by bolstering our team, enhancing our contracted and internal service provision, as well as investing into electric machinery and vehicles”.
Haydon Wick Parish Council has over 65 hectares of open spaces, hedgerows, shrubs and trees to maintain. The Council’s open spaces are hired by football teams, park yoga and other community uses. The Council has 23 play parks and a skate park on a rolling redevelopment programme. It has invested over £300,000 over the past three years on major upgrades to several play parks. The Council serves 23,000 residents and is fully committed to investing in parks and open spaces to improve the health and wellbeing of its community. The Council also shares the responsibility for maintaining areas within the Seven Fields Conservation Area and Mouldon Hill Country Park, both located in North Swindon.
