Haydon Wick Parish Council swaps seasons greetings for much-needed festive gift of food

Haydon Wick Parish Council swaps seasons greetings for much-needed festive gift of food 1900 1200 Caroline Hunt

‘Substituting Christmas Greetings for Festive Donations…’

This year, Haydon Wick Parish Council made the decision to donate to the Swindon Food Collective instead of sending corporate Christmas Cards. Each year, the Council spends up to £200.00 on seasons greetings, however this year, funds were diverted to a greater cause.

Chairman of the Council, Councillor Vinay Manro said that “while we still want to send festive greetings to all of our contacts, we decided that a donation to the Swindon Food Collective would benefit members of our local community and we hope, make a real difference to someone’s Christmas”.

Over the last year the Swindon Food Collective has seen demand for their assistance increase in many areas with one zone particularly being the Haydon Wick and surrounding SN25 area.

Parish Council accomplishes meaningful playpark redevelopment with the inclusion of accessible play equipment

Parish Council accomplishes meaningful playpark redevelopment with the inclusion of accessible play equipment 150 150 Caroline Hunt

The Parish Council hosted a successful grand opening event for the new, inclusive Luna Close Play Park. Young carers from Oakhurst Community Primary School, Rebecca and Benjamin from local charity Benjamin’s Smile, Councillors Richard Hailstone, Steve Heyes and John Jackson and Council staff celebrated the opening in festive style with bubbles, doughnuts and balloons.

The Parish Council has allocated £80,000 in the current financial year for the refurbishment and enhancement of two local play areas; Luna Close in Oakhurst and Gaynor Close in Abbey Meads. The Council is committed to maintaining all of their 23 play parks to a high standard and sets aside a significant portion of their budget each year to do so.

The Parish Council worked closely with Benjamin’s Smile Charity and Oakhurst Community Primary School who came up with a wish list of items they would like to see.

Karen Taylor (Pastoral support and Young Carers Lead at Oakhurst Community Primary School) said

“The Young Carers in our school have put so much into raising money towards the inclusive play park. They have run the ‘O Factor’ talent show, a non-uniform day and various other events and presentations to raise money and awareness. This is exactly what has happened, the awareness and appreciation in our school for inclusion is at an all-time high.

Luna Close Play Area looks fantastic, you would think it has always been this way. It is great that now all the children can now have fun together!”

Luna Close is now home new, exciting and accessible equipment, and is tailored to the varying requirements of their children with the inclusion of a high back swing, double width slide, accessible roundabout, and numerous play panels.

Rebecca from Benjamin’s Smile had this to say about the overall project:

“I am so happy with how Luna Close Play Area looks and can’t believe that already this is happening to two other play parks in the area. It is an amazing achievement and has happened so quickly.

This project has had such an impact on so many people. The community now have a play park that all children can use. The accessible equipment means that children with disabilities can play but also can be used by all ages and abilities.

The children from our school have become so aware of inclusion in general, I often have children approach me and tell me they have visited somewhere where they have seen other accessible equipment. The children from our school (especially our Young Carers who helped fundraise) are extremely proud of what they have achieved and are grateful they can now play all together. I think this is the key point, this play area is completely inclusive now!

I first began this appeal as it became impossible to bring my children to the park. Benjamin’s siblings wanted to play but equally wanted to play with their brother and to see Benjamin getting upset as he wasn’t able to join in made it a heart-breaking outing.

Fast forward to today, Benjamin’s brothers can now push him on the roundabout, the swings and watch him play with the sensory equipment. It really has/will change our lives and it certainly is showing ‘Benjamin’s infectious smile’.

I never expected the amount of support that has been shown towards inclusion in our area and at the speed it has been. However, Haydon Wick Parish Council have not only shown their support but more importantly they have acted upon it and that is why we are here, unveiling Luna Close Play Area today”.

The Council has recently awarded the next contract for resurfacing Voyager Drive Play Area in Oakhurst, North Swindon, before the end of the financial year. The awarded contract was for Vitaplay due to its innovative design, proven good workmanship (following last year’s resurfacing works at King George V Play Area) and its competitive costings. Further details on this project will be announced on the Council’s social media pages within the next few weeks.

Enabling and serving our community

Enabling and serving our community 1900 1200 Caroline Hunt

The Parish Council has a community grants budget which is used to help support local charities and voluntary groups each year with funding to enable them to carry out projects and activities for the benefit of local residents.  Our Grants Working Party meets three times a year to consider applications and so far this year we have proudly awarded over £6,324.00 to the following groups: BEST (Be A Better You), Wiltshire Police North Neighbourhood Policing Team, Friends of TWIGS and Wiltshire Search & Rescue.

A spokesperson for the Parish Council said:

“The parish council is committed to developing the community with its grants scheme. This year we set aside £9,000 to give to various community groups and in this round, we were pleased to support TWIGs, Wiltshire Police North Neighbourhood Policing Team and Wiltshire Search & Rescue by giving a combined total of £3,874.00. Our funds will help these fantastic community groups to deliver their services to many.

Liza Lishman, Friends of TWIGS said “We are extremely grateful to Haydon Wick Parish Council for helping Friends of Twigs to supply basic art kits for people on the Art Therapy courses at TWIGS (Therapeutic Work In Gardening in Swindon).  These courses give people a safe space to explore their emotions and to reflect on the stresses in their lives – be they caring responsibilities or the effect of the pandemic on their mental health.  Participants have time to focus on their wellbeing and to try out new art techniques, many of them inspired by the gardens and natural world around them.”

Haydon Wick Community Memory Café Opened it’s doors with roaring success and to the sounds of the 60s

Haydon Wick Community Memory Café Opened it’s doors with roaring success and to the sounds of the 60s 1900 1200 Caroline Hunt

Haydon Wick Parish Council opened the doors to it’s Community Memory Café for the first time on Wednesday 13th October. The café is designed to offer a safe place to socialise, learn more about living with dementia and memory loss, signpost attendees to local services, and enjoy something new each session.

The morning of Wednesday 13th October welcomed the official launch date for the eagerly anticipated opening of the community café. The project started in September 2020 with a public consultation process, has achieved a number of external funding grants to enhance planned services, and will be taking place every second and fourth Wednesday of the month, 10.30am – 12.30pm at the Haydon Wick Parish Council Offices. With an army of willing and very able volunteers, the open morning welcomed local residents, who enjoyed baked treats, live music, a seated exercise class and more. The open morning was designed by Memory Café Co-ordinator Joanne Newman to be a ‘taster session’ of the varied and engaging activities to come.

Ellen Baker Lee, Chair of the Community Development Committee had this to say about the project:

“This has been a project very close to my heart and the team here have worked so hard to bring the Memory Cafe dream to a reality.  We are aware that people living with dementia benefit enormously from external stimulation and being in a position to offer the Mobii Table as well as music, movement and company is a real privilege. Families and carers often feel isolated, and this has been exacerbated by the pandemic.  We can now offer a safe space for people to enjoy the company of others, and of course, a slice of cake! We are also very thankful to our wonder Community Bus drivers who have helped enormously by ensuring safe transport is available to those within our community who need it and are able to benefit from this wonderful community service”.

The Council was delighted to receive grant funding from The Community Outbreak Management Fund (Voluntary Action Swindon) to assist with COVID safety actions and messaging of reassurance for attendees; and funding towards a sensory state-of-the-art omiVista Mobbi table. The sensory table will form part of the larger community project, and be shared within the community through a number of local groups and organisations.

Vinay Manro, Chairman of the Council had this to say: “the inaugural Memory Café was a signification moment for Haydon Wick. The café’s development is yet another service we have committed to delivering for the community of Haydon Wick. We are incredibly proud of the café which was initially made possible through several external grant funds.  Our café will run twice monthly and eventually travel across the parish, making good use of our community bus service, so contact us if you or someone you know may benefit from attending.

If you or someone you know is living with memory loss and would like to attend the Haydon Wick Memory Café, please call 01793 722446 or email youthandcommunity@haydonwick.gov.uk
