At a recent Full Council meeting, a resident raised concerns about the increasing use of e-bikes on shared pathways and walkways. Issues highlighted included excessive speed, pedestrians feeling startled when bikes approach, and particular challenges for older residents who may not hear bells or warnings in time.
In response, Haydon Wick Parish Council has launched a social media awareness campaign to promote considerate use of shared paths and reinforce a simple message: Pedestrians First. The campaign aims to encourage everyone using our shared spaces to slow down, stay alert, and show courtesy and respect to others, helping to create a safer and more enjoyable environment for all.
Our first message in the campaign is simple:
Pedestrians First. Always!
As children return to school this September, our footpaths and shared-use routes will become even busier with families, students and residents travelling around Haydon Wick.
We’re seeing more cyclists, scooters, mobility scooters and other wheeled users on our pathways than ever before. While active travel is encouraged, it’s important to remember that some pedestrians, particularly older residents and those with visible or unseen disabilities, can find fast-moving vehicles passing close by frightening or intimidating.
If you’re riding, please:
Slow down around pedestrians Give plenty of space when passing Use a bell or politely announce your approach Follow signs on shared-use paths Be extra vigilant around schools and at drop-off and pick-up times Remember that pedestrians are the most vulnerable path usersWhat feels like a safe speed to you can feel very different to a young child, an older resident, or someone with mobility, sight or hearing difficulties.
A little patience and consideration goes a long way.
