Donation of Defibrillator

The Redeemed Christian Church of God (Christ’s Love Assembly), Swindon, has very kindly donated a defibrillator to Haydon Wick Parish Council. The Church has also donated funds towards any installation cost and the first year’s maintenance.

Immediate CPR and defibrillation can more than double the chances of survival in cases of cardiac arrest.

Adebanjo Adeniran, the Pastor of the Church says:

“Our Church is very pleased to provide this important item of life-saving equipment to the Parish.”

Councillor Vinay Manro, Chairman of Haydon Wick Parish Council had this to say about the donation:

“We are delighted that the Redeemed Christian Church of God (Christ’s Love Assembly) have provided this valuable community asset to the Council.

Speed is the key in cardiac arrest survival, and community defibrillators can make the difference between life and death in an emergency. We are truly grateful for this donation.”

The location of the machine will be in close proximity to the Parish Council offices and available in an open space for emergency use. The device will be registered with the National Defibrillator Database and on The Circuit, National Defibrillator Network.

‘Happy to Chat’ benches aim to combat loneliness and isolation

As part of its work to improve health and wellbeing within the community it represents, Haydon Wick Parish Council installed new ‘Happy to Chat’ benches as a trial on the Hamble Road/ Thames Avenue footpath in November 2021.

This initiative aims to help break down the barriers of social isolation and get people talking. The benefits of ‘Happy to Chat’ benches have been demonstrated by other similar initiatives across the country, and studies have found that providing benches allows people to spend longer outside, which is beneficial for mental health and helps to connect people within communities. This connection is particularly important for people who might find social venues like cafes too expensive or too busy.

However, these benches were removed on 30^th June 2022, due to numerous reports of anti-social behaviour during the evening hours. The Council’s decision to remove the benches was not an easy one and its priority was to give those residents directly affected by the behaviour priority, whilst they are in their homes.

On Monday 11th July 2022, we saw the last of our youth summer football skills sessions with Allstarz Sports Coaching

Due to the heat, not quite so many young people attended, but those who did all had a great time as always.

Thank you to Tom & Jazz for delivering these sessions for our young people. From speaking with parents, it is clear that the summer sessions have been a huge hit and we hope to offer these again in the near future.

It is always great to receive feedback on how you felt the activity went and if there is anything you want to see provided for your children moving forward.

The Grass Cutting Team has just started its fifth cycle of the parish and is followed closely by a team of two back up operatives and the mini compact sweeper. The team is currently cutting in Haydon Wick/Greenmeadow/Woodhall Park/Moredon area and will shortly move on to Mouldon Hill and Haydon End/Taw Hill.

The Hedge Cutting Team started the official schedule at the end of June cutting in Zone 1 (Abbey Meads). The team is expected to be in Abbey Meads for another four weeks, taking us to the end of July.

The team will then move on to Zone 2 (Haydon End/Taw Hill) early August, which will take three weeks.

Then on to Zone 3 (Haydon Wick) from week commencing 22^nd August 2022 which will take five weeks.

Ending up in Zone 4 (Oakhurst) from 5^th September 2022 which will take one week.

The above scheduling is subject to weather and resources.

There is also a team available for priority hedge cutting such as road junctions, low hanging branches on footpaths and areas that are in need of attention before the planned schedule. Please email tidyup@haydonwick.gov.uk if there are any urgent areas to bring to our attention.

The peak season is always full on for our very busy and hardworking Parks & Open Spaces Team so please give them a boost by saying hello, telling them when they’ve done a good job and email any examples for the social media and website. The collective team work that has gone in to this season so far has been fantastic and the team should be very proud of its achievements.

The Parish Council has an annual Community Grants budget of £6,000 which is used to help support local charities and voluntary groups each year with funding to enable them to carry out projects and activities for the benefit of local residents. The grants are awarded three times a year by the Community Development Committee where presentations are given by the charities to the committee before any decision is made.

The Community Development Committee met on the Tuesday 7^th June 2022 and agreed to award a grant of £3,000.00 to AFC Haydon Vale. The grant will be used to fund set up costs and deliver grassroots football at Trent Road.

AFC Haydon Vale has expressed their thanks to the Council for the grant by having this to say:

“The whole committee, its coaches and members would like to thank the Parish Council for awarding us the grant as it will help us to move forward with our project. We look forward to seeing members of the community on Sunday mornings cheering us along!”

The Parish Council has received confirmation that their planning application was granted this week which enables them to erect a Grounds Maintenance Facility comprising workshops offices and parking at Blunsdon Road Allotment Gardens, Blunsdon Road, Haydon Wick.

This development represents a significant opportunity for the Parish Council to provide a professional base for its Parks & Open Spaces service.

Since Swindon Borough Council devolved grounds maintenance services to the Parish Council in 2017 the size of the Council’s in-house Parks & Open Spaces Team has increased. Subsequently the scale of the operation has influenced the size of the Grounds Maintenance Facility required to house a team and their equipment adequately.

For numerous years, the Parish Council has had a temporary arrangement at the Goodearl Allotment site. The Parks & Open Spaces service has grown significantly since 2017, providing enhanced grounds maintenance service and the large-scale operations needed a fit for purpose environment in which to operate.

The Parish Council is responsible for the upkeep of 24 play areas and open spaces in the parish. With 11 team members the Parks & Open Spaces Team (POST) is responsible for litter picking, dog bin emptying, fixing, recycling and installing play equipment, graffiti removal, grass cutting, hedge and shrub cutting and just about anything that is needed to keep the parish looking green, clean and tidy.

The new Facility’s final designs will be in keeping with the natural surroundings, be sourced from environmentally friendly materials, and overall a tidier and aesthetically pleasing looking facility than the current collection of temporary shipping containers.

Haydon Wick Parish Council was delighted with the turn out for the event at King George V Field last Thursday as over 1,000 people attended throughout the day.

Councillor Rebecca Ross, Chair of the Community Development Committee had this to say about the event:

“It was wonderful to see so many of the community come together and enjoy the day, and just goes to show the fantastic community spirit we have here in Haydon Wick.

A special thanks to all of those who contributed to making the day a success, without them we couldn’t have made the day happen.”

Entertainment was provided by the Britannia Majorettes, live music from Jol Rose, and Singing for the Brain, all of which had lots of people singing along and enjoying the show.

A selection of jubilee craft pursuits for young people were a real success. There were hand-decorated crowns being worn around the event all day. Allstarz coaching also helped keep the young people entertained by providing various workshops throughout the day.

The Parish Council’s Memory Café put on an array of stimulating activities, such as making recycled bird feeders and planting sunflowers. These activities attracted a lot of interest and even saw some young people joining in with the memory café residents.

The biggest highlight of the event was the fly past by the Lancaster bomber. All eyes to the sky to see such an incredible aircraft grace our skies. A range of craft stalls and street food was also available which kept everybody refreshed throughout the day.

As we look towards the summer and hopefully some good weather, we are looking forwards this years outings and a holiday, as things are getting back to some kind of normality.

We had a small Easter Raffle with some chocolates and Easter Eggs as prizes. We also has an Easter bonnet competition, with prizes for the best three, but it was very difficult to choose as they were all very good; we have some very talented members.

Our first outing of the year was to Abergavenny for the day. It is a lovely market town with both indoor and outdoor markets, and has a good shopping centre. It is very easy to spend a large amount of money. After lunch we made our way to Leading Labels where we had a cup of tea and some lovely cake, and another chance to spend some money, as they had some lovely shops in there. It was so good to be able to get out and about.

Now we are looking forward to our holiday at Eastbourne, and our next outing to Windsor. Along with this we are also planning to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, but more about those next time.

Haydon Wick Parish will be offering another extensive summer youth development programme for the residents of the parish. Following the success of last year, BEST- ‘Be A Better You’ will be back and will be providing weekly skill building sessions to provide children and younger adults aged between 7 and 16 years a safe, fun, and positive environment to develop essential life skills such as leadership and communication. The programme also offers a platform for increased socialisation, friendship building, and confidence making.

The weekly programme delivered in partnership with local charity BEST – Be A Better You is charitable organisation aimed at helping youths move away from a growing gang culture in Swindon by providing intensive mentorship programs in a number of different physical activities such as Boxing, MMA and football. Craig Hiscock (Operations Manager) had this to say about the project:

“BEST is really excited to be providing summer activities again in Haydon Wick. We will be adding in football session with our fully qualified FA coach Neil as well as the team games, boxing drills and skills and non-contact martial arts. Last year was a huge success and we cannot wait to work with the children and young people in the parish”.

Haydon Wick Parish Council are also teaming up with Allstarz Coaching to offer free, inclusive, weekly football skills workshops to children in the parish aged between 6 and 14 years old. Allstarz aim to help their participants meet their sporting potential and build their competence, confidence, and character.

“We are really pleased to be continuing our Partnership with Allstarz Sports Coaching and BEST and to be able to offer these free sessions. Both programmes provide a wonderful opportunity for local children to get active as well as to develop new skills, meet new friends and more importantly just have some fun! We encourage families to take advantage of the activities available but would advise people to book up quickly as in the past they have been really popular. A big thank you to everyone who is involved in helping to run these events.”

Haydon Wick Parish Council is proud to announce that as part of their Community Grant Giving scheme, the Wiltshire Police North Neighbourhood Policing Team will be benefitting from two new electric bikes. The patrol bike is less expensive than a patrol car or motorcycle yet nimble, quiet and community friendly. Chairman Vinay Manro said that:

‘Haydon Wick Parish Council was delighted to fund these new electric bikes for the Wiltshire Police North Neighbourhood Policing Team and contribute towards the safety and increased police presence within our community’.

To help alleviate the cost of the electric bikes whilst still offering an enhanced service to local residents, the Parish Council teamed-up with neighbouring Blunsdon Parish Council to share the cost of the second bike for the patrol team. Chairman Ian Jankinson, Blunsdon Parish Council said:

‘Blunsdon Parish Council was pleased to contribute to the new e-bikes for our neighbourhood police. Any way we can help to keep our Parish safer has got to be worth the investment. Thank you for the work you do to keep Blunsdon safe.’

Haydon Wick Parish Council annually allocated a Community Grants budget to provide financial assistance to a wide range of organisations, projects and activities which provide services for its residents. It is hoped that the grant received by the Neighbourhood Policing Team will provide a range of benefits, which include high visibility cycle patrols throughout the Parish to help prevent crime and anti-social behaviour. The bikes will allow officers to cover more areas of the Parish in a shorter time frame and allow access to harder-to-reach locations such as play parks, whilst being kind to our environment. The electric bikes will also enable officers to maintain pace with illegally motorised scooters to help tackle and prevent anti-social behaviours from occurring. PCSO Lee Hare had this to say regarding the bike donation:

‘We are truly grateful to both parishes for purchasing the two new electric bicycles for us. These bicycles have already given us the opportunity to cover over 300 miles and allowed the old bikes to be used by other officers to cover more ground around North Swindon and beyond. With the new modern bikes we are able to stay out on the streets longer and cover larger areas without the need to return to charge batteries. This in turn allows us to provide a longer visible presence, engage with the community and prevent crime and the fear of crime’.

Haydon Wick Parish Council hopes that the faster response times, shorter pursuits, expanded patrol range and importantly, enhanced community engagement and service will benefit the residents of the community for years to come.
