Enabling and serving our community

Enabling and serving our community 1900 1200 Caroline Hunt

The Parish Council has a community grants budget which is used to help support local charities and voluntary groups each year with funding to enable them to carry out projects and activities for the benefit of local residents.  Our Grants Working Party meets three times a year to consider applications and so far this year we have proudly awarded over £6,324.00 to the following groups: BEST (Be A Better You), Wiltshire Police North Neighbourhood Policing Team, Friends of TWIGS and Wiltshire Search & Rescue.

A spokesperson for the Parish Council said:

“The parish council is committed to developing the community with its grants scheme. This year we set aside £9,000 to give to various community groups and in this round, we were pleased to support TWIGs, Wiltshire Police North Neighbourhood Policing Team and Wiltshire Search & Rescue by giving a combined total of £3,874.00. Our funds will help these fantastic community groups to deliver their services to many.

Liza Lishman, Friends of TWIGS said “We are extremely grateful to Haydon Wick Parish Council for helping Friends of Twigs to supply basic art kits for people on the Art Therapy courses at TWIGS (Therapeutic Work In Gardening in Swindon).  These courses give people a safe space to explore their emotions and to reflect on the stresses in their lives – be they caring responsibilities or the effect of the pandemic on their mental health.  Participants have time to focus on their wellbeing and to try out new art techniques, many of them inspired by the gardens and natural world around them.”

‘Art is a healthy outlet and slows the “washing machine head”.’ TWIGS attendee.

Haydon Wick Community Memory Café Opened it’s doors with roaring success and to the sounds of the 60s

Haydon Wick Community Memory Café Opened it’s doors with roaring success and to the sounds of the 60s 1900 1200 Caroline Hunt

Haydon Wick Parish Council opened the doors to it’s Community Memory Café for the first time on Wednesday 13th October. The café is designed to offer a safe place to socialise, learn more about living with dementia and memory loss, signpost attendees to local services, and enjoy something new each session.

The morning of Wednesday 13th October welcomed the official launch date for the eagerly anticipated opening of the community café. The project started in September 2020 with a public consultation process, has achieved a number of external funding grants to enhance planned services, and will be taking place every second and fourth Wednesday of the month, 10.30am – 12.30pm at the Haydon Wick Parish Council Offices. With an army of willing and very able volunteers, the open morning welcomed local residents, who enjoyed baked treats, live music, a seated exercise class and more. The open morning was designed by Memory Café Co-ordinator Joanne Newman to be a ‘taster session’ of the varied and engaging activities to come.

Ellen Baker Lee, Chair of the Community Development Committee had this to say about the project:

“This has been a project very close to my heart and the team here have worked so hard to bring the Memory Cafe dream to a reality.  We are aware that people living with dementia benefit enormously from external stimulation and being in a position to offer the Mobii Table as well as music, movement and company is a real privilege. Families and carers often feel isolated, and this has been exacerbated by the pandemic.  We can now offer a safe space for people to enjoy the company of others, and of course, a slice of cake! We are also very thankful to our wonder Community Bus drivers who have helped enormously by ensuring safe transport is available to those within our community who need it and are able to benefit from this wonderful community service”.

The Council was delighted to receive grant funding from The Community Outbreak Management Fund (Voluntary Action Swindon) to assist with COVID safety actions and messaging of reassurance for attendees; and funding towards a sensory state-of-the-art omiVista Mobbi table. The sensory table will form part of the larger community project, and be shared within the community through a number of local groups and organisations.

Vinay Manro, Chairman of the Council had this to say: “the inaugural Memory Café was a signification moment for Haydon Wick. The café’s development is yet another service we have committed to delivering for the community of Haydon Wick. We are incredibly proud of the café which was initially made possible through several external grant funds.  Our café will run twice monthly and eventually travel across the parish, making good use of our community bus service, so contact us if you or someone you know may benefit from attending.

If you or someone you know is living with memory loss and would like to attend the Haydon Wick Memory Café, please call 01793 722446 or email youthandcommunity@haydonwick.gov.uk

FAQs – Development of Grounds Maintenance Facility

FAQs – Development of Grounds Maintenance Facility 1900 1200 Caroline Hunt

Haydon Wick Parish Council has announced exciting plans to support the delivery of their parks and open spaces service with the redevelopment of their existing facility, to enable continued high standards of outdoor spaces maintenance.

The Parish Council’s in-house Parks & Open Spaces (POS) service has increased significantly since 2017, when Swindon Borough Council devolved the responsibility to the Parish Council. As the scale of operation has grown, so has the necessity to improve the temporary service arrangement. The proposed regenerated facility, pending the outcome of planning permission, is to be built at Goodearl Leisure Gardens, home of the current temporary site, and will replace the temporary shipping containers arrangement.

The Parish Council is aware that residents may have questions, and have compiled a list of questions and answers below. The page is regularly updated, last updated: 05/10/2021

How much will this project cost?
The project will cost in the region of £350k

How will this impact the precept?
The Council will be applying to fund this via a Public Works Loan and the repayments will be reflected on the term applied for. Due to the sustainability of this facility and future proofing the home of the Parks & Open Spaces Team the term is likely to be 25 years. It is common for local authorities to apply for public works loans  – this in itself may have an impact on the budget but until this is reviewed in October – January the amount is unknown. Also further research is being presented on timescales, terms and interest rates.

Who is managing this?
Haydon Wick Parish Council

What are the dates, what could the impact be of project slippage?
The dates are subject to the tender process, but it is hopeful that this project will be completed by June 2022. The main impact of slippage will cost £225.00 per week which is for extended temporary welfare unit. Also delays may result in arising material costs due to economic growth, which cannot be measured. Additional contingency amounts of 3% on each item will be factored in to mitigate against any overspends.

Who will benefit from this development?
The Parks & Open Spaces team, with all round better facilities. Storage, workshop for painting and repairs, both mechanical and play equipment. Garage facility for mowers, compact sweeper. Electric charging points. Solar panels. Washdown for vehicles. Meeting room / rest room. Disabled washroom facilities.

How will this improve the existing service?
The larger space will allow the capacity to have various projects on going, comfort for the employees during breaks, additional space for play equipment repairs, winter bulb storage, timber storage, cement / aggregate storage. There will also be a kitted workshop for ease of repairs, additional storage space for tools and additional car parking spaces for the fleet of vehicles and ride on machines. The area in itself will be improved visually tidying up the current facilities.

What future running costs will this incur, and how will that impact the rate payer?
The running costs are not expected to be much more than they are now so we would not expect a noticeable up lift in costs.

What difference will this make to the service delivery, for example; grass and hedge cutting schedules?
The building alone with not impact the schedule but the Council is running a separate project to look at delivering an enhanced grounds maintenance service and will give separate updates accordingly.

Will there be any investment in equipment?
There will not be any investment in new equipment as part of this project. All our equipment is replaced as it becomes end of life or obsolete.

Have you considered any environmental initiatives when installing this building?
A great deal of consideration has been given to environmental matters. The facility will be equipped to allow a transition to electric vehicles for our whole fleet over the next few years.

The building will have solar panels fitted to generate much of the electricity the building needs and will ensure efficient use of water piping clean rain water into the allotments for use. Due to all our facilities being on one site our vehicles will travel less – with plans to reduce their carbon footprint further each year, until eventually being replaced by electric vehicles.

Has there been any impact on leisure garden plots?
Three plots were affected due to designated area for the build of the facility. Three affected plot holders were reallocated to an alternative site and the Council is hopeful that planning permission and lease variations will be agreed by Swindon Borough Council for the permission to build an additional 12 full size plots on the land adjacent to extend the facility beyond the current boundary. If permission is agreed, raised beds can be installed and the leisure garden plots will be accessible for any additional needs.

Future planning for continued delivery of the Council’s parks and open spaces management

Future planning for continued delivery of the Council’s parks and open spaces management 1900 1200 Caroline Hunt

Councillor Richard Hailstone, Chair of the Council’s Parks & Open Spaces Committee had this to say regarding the location of the improved facility:

“Over the past 18 months we have undertaken a feasibility study to find a suitable location for the facility. Due to Goodearl site being at the centre of our parish, close to all amenities and our office we would like to remain on the current site and make this our permanent home for our facility”.

Councillor Steve Heyes, Vice Chairman of the Parks & Open Spaces Committee said of the project: “It is a great opportunity to equip our team with a modern work base from which to deliver our services to the parish to the best standard we can. We will be proud to develop one of the most environmentally friendly sites in the area demonstrating that we really do care for the environment in which we all live”.

The facility will be sympathetic to its natural surroundings, use environmentally friendly materials, and will enable increased functionality for the service provision. The Council has also prioritised ensuring the redeveloped site is a long-term sustainable facility, and will include environmentally friendly energy conversion methods, and an electric vehicle charging unit.

Beat the Street Swindon is underway with nearly 13,000 people taking part!

Beat the Street Swindon is underway with nearly 13,000 people taking part! 1900 1200 Caroline Hunt

AN INVITATION TO GO PLAY BEAT THE STREET SWINDON

The Beat the Street Swindon game has launched with nearly 13,000 participants signing up on its first day and together walking, cycling, and rolling their way to almost 13,000 miles.

Beat the Street is a free, interactive game that encourages people of all ages to move more and to get active; it started on Wednesday, 15th September to Wednesday, 27th October.

As well as helping people to become healthier, it also improves air quality, congestion and pollution, and connects people to their communities and green spaces.

Beeping and flashing sensors called Beat Boxes have been placed on lampposts around the town for the duration of the game to help participants explore the local area and all it has to offer and to develop the habit of regular activity.

Primary school pupils have been given fobs while parents and teachers get a card from the school so they can accompany children, or take part on their own. The wider community can pick up a contactless card from one of the distribution points which are listed on the website at www.beatthestreet.me/swindon

Players then walk, cycle or roll between the Beat Boxes which are spaced about half a mile apart – hovering their fobs or cards over the Beat Boxes to score points. The further players travel, the more points they score for their community or school team. The first Beat Box you hover your card over marks the start of your journey.  Walk, cycle, roll, run or scoot to the next one and score 10 points.

There are leaderboards for schools, community teams and charity teams Jessie May and the Harbour Project, plus each leaderboard is divided into total and average points to ensure that smaller teams are in with an equal chance of winning.

Currently, Haydonleigh Primary School leads the total points leaderboard and ‘Wandering Heights’ leads the average points leaderboard, but with six weeks to go, it’s still all to play for!

The first week of the game is themed ‘Go Play’ for players to get to grips with the rules and subsequent weeks have a different focus, from Go Explore to Go Wild and Go Travel.

Beat the Street is brought to you by Swindon Borough Council working in partnership with Wiltshire and Swindon Sport (WASP), and Swindon Healthy Schools. It is delivered by Intelligent Health.

Councillor Brian Ford, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Adults and Health, said: “Beat the Street provides an incredible opportunity to support children and their families to become active as a habit, through a fun and friendly competition.

“Beat the Street also supports our Be the Change campaign which aims to encourage every Swindon resident to take small steps to reduce their impact on the environment.”
